A Gate Has Two Functions JOHN 10:1-29
• to LET FRIENDS IN
• to KEEP WOULD-BE INTRUDERS OUT
There are SHEEP and there are PREDATORS who are out to steal, kill and destroy (verse 10).
The Sheepfold Of the Kingdom of God
The sheepfold Jesus is talking about is the kingdom of God and eternal life in his presence.
The only way in is to be one of God's children
either by birth as a Jew and faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob or by adoption through faith in Yeshua/the Jewish Messiah.
That's what Jesus is referring to when he says in verse 16:
"I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd."
Jesus Is The Gate To Heaven For Both Believing Jews & Gentiles Who Have Trusted Yeshua ha Mashiah
Both believing Jews and Gentiles who have put their faith in Jesus the Messiah - Yeshua Ha Mashiach - are members of God's sheepfold, and will come in and out and find the rich pasture of eternal life Jesus promises.
In contrast, Jesus says in verse 10, there are others whose aim is to steal, kill and destroy the sheep. Some of these appear as sheep but in reality are wolves in sheep's clothing. To a casual observer they look part of God's sheepfold, but in time they give themselves away by their behaviour. Jesus himself warned his disciples to beware such people when he said that after his ascension ravening wolves would come in and seek to devour the flock MATTHEW 7:15-16).
