God's Justice & God's Mercy
Christ on the Cross: Painting by Eugene Delacroix 1845
The Cross of Christ Demonstrates God's Justice
• God's HOLINESS & HATRED OF SIN demands the punishment of sin by death of a perfect sacrifice
• God's LOVE required the death of The Lamb of God " who takes away the sins of the world" JOHN 1:29
The Cross Demonstrates God's Mercy
Instead of punishing us for our sins, Jesus took our sins upon himself on the Cross.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:21
God caused Christ to become sin on our behalf so that by identifying with his death we might be put right with God.
1 PETER 2:19-24
Although Jesus had committed no sin, he did not attempt to vindicate himself or return the insults he received. Instead he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly.
The Cross As God's Answer To Evil
- THE CROSS DEMONSTRATES GOD'S LOVE for sinful humanity
- THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST DEMONSTRATES GOD'S POWER over sin, death and satan
Jesus' death on the Cross is God's answer to the problem of evil and suffering in the world.
Christ's death and resurrection have defeated all the powers of hell and bought forgiveness of sin and eternal life to all who put their trust in Jesus' blood to make them righteous in the eyes of a holy God who hates sin but loves sinners.
Heaven or Hell
If God is a God of justice, it is clear that he will not allow evil to go unpunished. This raises the question of judgement after death and the treatment of those who have committed evil in this life as opposed to those who have not .
