God's Foolishness & Man's Wisdom
1 CORINTHIANS 1:22-23 [The Cross] is foolishness to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolishness to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.
Just as the Cross is scandalous to religious folk, so it seems sheer stupidity to clever folk, who pride themselves on their intelligence and wisdom. It seems crazy for someone to die a criminal's death on a Roman cross as the only way to save the world from going to hell - and of course no intelligent person believes all those fire and brimstone stories of the burning fires of hell any more. That's just mediaeval mythology!
The Foolishness Of The Cross To Atheistic Scientific Man
The Cross is still ridiculous to atheists like Dawkins and others, who sneer at the very idea and say such ideas are like a poisonous virus that should be eradicated from the world because science has the answers to every question now. There's no need for these children's fairy stories which might have been OK when we were tiny, but we've grown up now and realise how foolish they really are.
The clever look for rational and scientific proofs before they will believe Jesus died for their sins. His death on the Cross offends their intelligence because it just seems stupid /it makes no sense at all.
