THE APOSTLES' CREED

a statement of faith
from circa 3rd-4th cent AD

KEY BELIEFS


I BELIEVE in...
God the Father, Almighty,
Maker of Heaven & Earth
& in
Jesus Christ, his Only Son,
Our LORD, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
He was crucified,
died & was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again

from the dead,
he ascended into heaven and
sits at the right hand of
God the Father Almighty,

from where he will come again
to judge the living & the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy universal Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the dead
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Supernatural conception
Natural birth by a virgin
Physical suffering
Crucifixion, death & burial
Descent to Hell (lit Hades)
Resurrection on the third day

The unity of all belivers
Forgiveness of sins
Physical resurrection
Eternal life

The Development Of Creeds

As the Christian Church grew, the theology of The Trinity began to be explained more clearly for new Christians as a way of combatting various false teachings (heresies) in the form of a CREED, or statement of what Christians believe (Latin credo = I believe).
