Three Greek Words for "Love"
There are three Greek words for our single English word "love" -
• EROS = PHYSICAL LOVE - sexual desire or lust
• PHILIA = EMOTIONAL AFFECTION - a strong liking for a friend
• AGAPE-LOVE = GOD-GIVEN love for the unlovely & unlovable
The Good News Is All About Love
A. God's agape-love for sinful human beings like you and me
Real love is not our loving God, but the fact that God loved us so much he sent his Son (Jesus Christ) as a sacrifice to take away our sins. 1 JOHN 4:10
B. Our love for God in response to God's unconditional, undeserved love
We love God because he first loved us. 1 JOHN 4:19
C. God's agape-love in us for others
Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.
JOHN 13:35
We need to experience God's agape-love for us before we can show it to others. God has designed us to find our security, self-worth and significance in him alone. The problems arise when we try to meet these three crucial needs in someone or something else.
